Vision
Steps towards the creation of Emerging Materials Global Network (EMGN)
Emerging Materials Global Network (EMGN) aspires to establish a preeminent federation that unites and embodies the global materials science community. In an era characterized by swift technological advancements and unparalleled scientific breakthroughs, the EMGN stands as a pillar of innovation and collaboration. The EMGN encompasses a vibrant and interconnected community of researchers, scientists, engineers, and industry experts committed to advancing the field of materials science for the betterment of humanity and the environment. The EMGN seeks not merely to convene conferences but to create a sustainable network that fosters collaboration, innovation, and knowledge exchange on a global scale.
Our vision for the EMGN is to create a unique platform that transcends geographical boundaries, bringing together researchers, scientists, engineers, and industry experts from across the globe. The annual meeting of the EMGN is not merely a conference; it is a global networking meeting meticulously designed to facilitate profound and impactful connections and collaborations. These interactions aim to catalyze significant advancements in the field of materials science, thereby contributing to the collective progress of humanity and the enhancement of our global environment. Through this unparalleled network, we aim to foster an enduring legacy of innovation, knowledge exchange, and scientific excellence on a worldwide scale.
At the core of our global network lies an unwavering commitment to the exploration and dissemination of pioneering research. Members of this esteemed network will have the opportunity to engage deeply with the latest advancements in materials science, including but not limited to nanotechnology, biomaterials, smart materials, and sustainable materials. Through this endeavor, we aim to provide a comprehensive and detailed overview of the current state of research, seeking not only to inform but also to inspire. Our goal is to foster a dynamic environment where cutting-edge discoveries are not just shared but actively cultivated and propelled forward.
Our vision transcends the confines of the laboratory and the lecture hall. We believe that advancements in materials science have the potential to address some of humanity's most pressing challenges, especially those affecting our environment. By prioritizing sustainable and environmentally friendly materials, we aim to contribute to solutions that foster a healthier planet and improve the quality of life globally. This commitment underscores our dedication not only to advancing scientific knowledge but also to promoting tangible, positive impacts on society and the environment.
In addition to scientific advancements, EMGN will emphasize critical elements often overlooked in international conferences, such as policy, regulation, and the societal impact of materials science. These considerations are crucial for shaping the future of the field, ensuring that innovations are not only scientifically robust but also socially responsible and effectively regulated. By addressing these dimensions, we aim to foster a comprehensive understanding that bridges the gap between scientific progress and its broader implications, promoting a balanced and informed approach to the advancement of materials science.
The EMGN is dedicated to aligning its members' research activities and endeavors with the United Nations 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). By fostering innovation and collaboration in materials science, we aim to make significant contributions to several SDGs, including affordable and clean energy (SDG 7), industry, innovation, and infrastructure (SDG 9), and responsible consumption and production (SDG 12). Our focus on sustainable materials and environmentally friendly technologies supports climate action (SDG 13) and promotes the development of resilient communities and sustainable cities (SDG 11).
Furthermore, EMGN aims to mobilize its research community to focus on advanced biomaterials and medical technologies, directly contributing to the advancement of Good Health and Well-being (SDG 3). Through the development of novel solutions, the network seeks to enhance healthcare outcomes and address critical health challenges on a global scale. In addition, by advancing materials for water purification and management, EMGN supports Clean Water and Sanitation (SDG 6), ensuring that innovations in materials science contribute to providing safe and accessible water for all.
EMGN's commitment to developing new industries and fostering job creation is closely aligned with the goal of Decent Work and Economic Growth (SDG 8), thereby driving sustainable economic development. In addition, our dedication to democratizing access to advanced technologies and promoting global partnerships significantly contributes to reducing inequalities (SDG 10), effectively bridging the gap between diverse regions and communities.
Recognizing the crucial role of environmental stewardship, EMGN serves as a platform for exchanging and sharing advances in materials that reduce marine pollution and support the health of aquatic ecosystems, aligning with Life Below Water (SDG 14). Additionally, through promoting sustainable land use and innovative agricultural practices, EMGN contributes to Life on Land (SDG 15), ensuring that advancements in materials science support biodiversity and ecosystem health.
Through our global network, we strive to drive progress that benefits not only the scientific community but also society and the environment at large. Our commitment to building partnerships and fostering collaborative efforts is central to our mission, aligning with Partnerships for the Goals (SDG 17) and ensuring that our initiatives contribute to a sustainable and inclusive future for all.
EMGN places a strong emphasis on networking and collaboration, fostering an environment that encourages the exchange of ideas and the formation of partnerships. Through interactive sessions, panel discussions, and social events, participants will have ample opportunities to connect with peers, establish new contacts, and build lasting relationships that will support their work for years to come.
The establishment of this global network will amplify the influence of materials science in policymaking and the implementation of solutions for environmental preservation and sustainable societal development. EMGN will serve as a worldwide platform, facilitating collaboration and communication among scientists from all disciplines and countries within the field of materials science. It will promote multidisciplinary joint research, training, and education while advocating for access to information and resources.
Although the EMGN has not yet been officially inaugurated, its first annual meeting is scheduled to take place in September 2025 in Istanbul. This inaugural meeting will serve as a forum to reach a consensus on the formation of this non-profit international union of materials scientists. Membership will be open to scientists and professionals engaged in materials science and related fields, including students and retired seniors.
